Abstract
In any consideration of the origin of the practice of dentistry we must recognize that the profession evolved first out of man's natural desire to alleviate ancient experiences of physical distress, occasioned principally by prehistoric warring tendencies and modes of living, and secondly through the desire for personal adornment, which later sought expression in subjecting the teeth to many weird varieties of embellishment. It can safely be said that the role which the primitive practice of dentistry played in a peoples existence is an index of the degree of civilization which they enjoyed.
