Abstract
The Civil War dominated the nineteenth-century scene in America's national history. In this war the issues were very complex. Basically, however, two cultures. Northern and Southern, sought dominance for the purpose of giving direction to the American way of life. Unfortunately the statesmen of the day failed to find a solution other than that of going to war. Thus, the nation plunged into a struggle which killed many hundreds of thousands of Americans.
