Abstract
The term adult education means many things to many people. To a housewife in Chicago it may mean a course in home economics that will teach her the art of better cooking and sewing. To a chemistry professor in a mid-western university it may mean his twenty students in correspondence courses. To a young engaged couple it may mean the series of marriage preparation courses they are attending. All of these activities come under the scope of adult education. Adult education, then, in this study is defined as any formal learning that people past the compulsory school age engage in but not for the purpose of obtaining a regular college degree.
