Abstract

Chromium is used very extensively at the present time as an exterior plate over other metals. It has found favor not only because of its brilliant blue, untarnishable lustre, but also because of its extreme hardness. The great increase in the demand for chromium plate in recent years, rapidly relegating nickel plate into the background, has resulted in increased research and experimentation .in the field of chromium plating, in the endeavor to provide a lasting, beautiful plate at a minimum of expense.

Present chromium plating baths containing sulphuric acid as the active agent of deposition leave much to be desired as far as the extent of the bright plating range, the throwing power, and other factors, are concerned. Many substitutes for sulphuric acid have been tried as addition agents, with varying degrees of success. To show that sodium fluoride can be used as an addition agent, and that it increases the bright plating range for chromium, is the purpose of this investigation.
