Abstract
The United States was yet a comparatively young nation in 1800. Although victorious in the war for independence, and although formally recognized ln the Treaty of Paris (1783), yet England did not treat her former colonies as a separate nation for her troops still occupied the American frontier posts at Mackinaw, Niagra, Detroit, and Oswego. The war, moreover, put a heavy burden of debt upon the United States. The country was on the verge of bankruptcy. Each colony floated its own issue of worthless paper money. There was little activity under these conditions along the frontier; hence, we find very few Americans engaged in the fur trade. True enough, there were many pioneers in Tennessee and Kentucky, but these were primarily settlers rather than fur traders.
