Abstract
Supervision in recent years has gained a considerable degree of importance in education; but though its need has been recognized, its value and effectiveness have been questioned. Since it has become one of the essential factors in the progress of education, it deserves to be studied and to be understood. The writer's endeavor in this work is to: 1. Present the various explanations of supervision as given by different educators and exponents of supervision. 2. Trace summarily the historical development of supervision. 3. Point out the factors which render supervision necessary in education. 4. Describe the methods used in the evaluation of supervision. 5. Summarize several studies and experiments which demonstrate the methods suggested for the evaluation of supervision and which show that supervision has been effective.
