Abstract

Before any attempt was made to gather material for this thesis, the writer interviewed Mr. Victor Sholis, political writer with the Chicago Times, who traveled with Roosevelt and Landon during the campaign, being to the Times what Arthur Sears Henning was to the Tribune. Mr. Sholis offered many valuable hints regarding what to look for in the study that was to be made. He made special mention of the "Riga dispatch," which is discussed in the first chapter, and the "Mellowdrama" of the Button Hoax and the Social Security pictures discussed in chapter two of this work.

With these points mentioned by Mr. Sholis in mind, a study was made of the Chicago Times for the three months previous to the election, with especial notice paid to material related to the Chicago Tribune. A thorough survey was then made of the Chicago Tribune files from August 1 to November 4, inclusive. This examination covered the Tribune news columns, editorial columns, cartoon, and picture page. An attempt was made to coordinate material relating to the much discussed "Riga dispatch." Other news, editorials, and cartoons were treated chronologically.

Several surveys, incorporated in the last chapter, attempted to discover the relative amount of news play given to the candidates of the two major parties. A study was also made of the New York Times for a period of two weeks to establish whether or not the Tribune covered political news thoroughly and fairly.
