Abstract
Although simple and fractional distillation have been used commercially for many centuries, fractional distillation has been used in the laboratory only during comparatively recent years. The early laboratory fractionating columns were much less efficient than were the industrial columns. Starting about the year 1910 much work has been done in an attempt to improve the small laboratory columns. It has been the purpose of this work to build a column which combines some of the good features of columns of other workers. In addition, the column was built with the purpose of illustrating the theory of fractional distillation and thus make it a valuable teaching aid. Many methods of determining the "number of theoretical plates" of a fractionating column are described in the literature. One of the simplest forms of calculating is modified and applied in calculating the efficiency of this column.
