Abstract

In this thesis it has been the intention of the author to trace the non-military aspects of the Civil lar in the United States. Perhaps the cause underlying all immediate cause, was a social one, brought about by two entirely different social structures under the same Constitution. When one side tried to break away and aet up its own government, a war resulted which saw each aide fighting with faith in its own cause. The result was a South, torn of ancient tradition&, and broken economically, socially, and politically. The struggle to build up a new civilization from the ruins of the old one, met with interference during the hectic period of reconstruction. Today, over seventy years after the war, this section of our country gives evidence of the obstacles which had to be and still have to be met.
