Abstract
WHAT IS CHARACTER? Dr. John Dewey puts it down as a commonplace that the end of all schoolwork is the development of character, but the difficulty lies in the execution of it. He gives as the reason for this difficulty of execution, the fact that we have not a clear conception of what character means. "We know what character means in terms of the actions which proceed from it, but we have not a definite conception of it on its inner side, as a system of working forces."
To make a study of this system of inner forces has been my object in this thesis. In working out the problem I have considered the definitions of character as set forth by several authorities, in order to determine what elements make up character, as my first step.
