Abstract
Reading has always had a place of first importance in the elementary school curriculum. However radical changes have taken place in the teaching of reading during the last twenty years. A generation ago, emphasis was placed upon oral reading, but it is recognized today that silent reading needs more teaching emphasis than oral reading because it is recognized that silent reading is used far more in the daily life of the individual. The average person encounters numerous situations daily when he is called upon to get the thought from the printed page and apply it in his life. In comparison the need for expressive oral reading is indeed rare.
