Abstract
the purpose of this thesis is to institute a comparison between George Meredith and John Galsworthy. The points of comparison will be based on the differences or similarities in the style, philosophy, and general characteristics of each man as found through a careful study of the novels written by each. The novels compared were chosen by their importance in the literary periods of each man and not by any outstanding similarities between some novel of Galsworthy's and another of Meredith's. The following books have aided me very much: "George Meredith," by J.B. Priestley, "George Meredith, A Study and An Appraisal," by William Chislett, Jr., "John Galsworthy, A Survey," by Leon Schallit, "John Galsworthy," by Sheila Kaye-Smith; and "George Meredith in Anecdote and Criticism," by J. A. Hammerton.
