Abstract

Reaction from the war, from its hysteria, its horror, brought on changes in morals and manners. The bars were down. Hide bound morality was considered old fashioned. Abandon was the watch word of the age. Old standards, accepted during the nineties, were cast aside, and recklessness, spice, zest, replaced conservative conduct. As the height of the change was reached in the latter twenties, the reaction took a definite form. What had been reaction for reactions sake, now became a crystallized reaction with definite limits. "If our younger writers were simply content to raise a standard of revolt against tradition, their work would be as sterile as the life from which they were revolting. It is their positive achievement rather than their revolt which concerns us in estimating the quality of their work."
