Abstract

Max Reinhardt is the epitome of all great art in the theatre. To him we owe the recreation of the importance and necessity of a knowledge of stagecrafts, the glorification of the dance, the beauty of exquisite costuming and the inspirational effect of music. Germany could not have reached such great heights in world theatre without Max Reinhardt, nor could her dramatic art have enjoyed such widespread fame. Others have been mere followers of the great Reinhardt for nothing accomplished on the German stage is so far removed that it cannot be traced back to this great name in the theatre. Through each succeeding Reinhardt spectacle, the modern trend of the theatre can be seen.

Reinhardt has applied not a formula but an infinite number of formulas, according to circumstances, or the work he interprets, at the suggestion of his own fancy. He has created a throng of diverse enchantments, magic worlds - born for an evening, made of colored light, rhythms, and human voices and faces.
