Abstract
To make straight the paths for the poets, and the critics, the terms literature and character shall be defined, the extent, as well as the limitation, of the influence of literature on character outlined, and a method of approach to the study of literature discussed. First, then, there will be a discussion of terms, then the opinions of writers on the moral values of literature, and finally, in the light of this discussion, this paper will attempt to show whether these writers claim more for literature than it actually can and does accomplish, and just how literature can be made a contributing force in the building of' character.
