Abstract
This thesis is the result of a survey to determine why The Milwaukee Journal devotes so much space in its sports section to bowling and amateur basketball. As these two sports are comparatively unimportant relative to the extensive professional and collegiate exhibitions now so prevalent, adherence to this policy has made The Journal unique so far as state and local newspapers are concerned and anything that is unique is worthy of analysis.
However, it is not to be construed that this work by means of general summary and accompanying comment is forwarded as a means of explaining the general attitude of The Journal relative to sports. While this attitude may be reflected by various inferences made in the treatment of the subject at hand, it is not to be regarded as authoritative or authentic. Such inferences as will of necessity appear as a result of the analytical development of the subject are to be regarded merely as inferences which may or may not be supplementary to fact. Mere implications have no place in this thesis and must not be understood to have either direct or indirect bearing upon the specific context.
