Abstract

Perhaps one of the strongest proofs that any idea or movement is worth considering lies in the fact that the conservatives have become alarmed and have arisen in protest. For their ranks are so small that they have little influence except to concentrate the attention of the public on such questions as are disturbing them. This must be the reason, then, for the wide-spread interest in the "new movement" in poetry. It has been criticized and condemned as much as, if not more than, any new idea or movement that has ever originated, until poets, as well as readers, have become interested, and before long have found in it an irresistible charm. Its fascination lies in its novelty--its novelty of theme, of rhythm, of thought, and above all in its parallel development with the spiritual life of the age. The modern poetry expresses, as poetry has never before expressed its contemporary life, the revolt of the modern age against the artificialities and exaggerations of the immediate past.
