Abstract

Our public schools which attempted to include in their program every subject which may contribute to the development of human character or to the elevation of human happiness, did not until recently, include music. Music was looked upon as an art which should be taught to the gifted ones only and, therefore, should be taught privately. It is only recently that our educators are beginning to realize the important role music plays in human life. It has been only recently that music has been introduced as a subject into the public school. Even today there is a lot of discussion as to the feasibility of teaching music in the public school. There are still many who do not realize the importance of music to human welfare. I shall endeavor in this thesis to make it clear to everyone interested in the education of our people that music is, at least, as significant as any of the subjects we teach in our public schools. I shall try to prove that music is fundamental in education. I shall try to prove that no matter what one may define the aim of education music will contribute to it greatly. I shall divide my thesis into three chapters. The first chapter I will devote to the history of public-school music. I will give a bird's eye view of its development from the time of its introduction to the present day. In the second chapter I shall take up the question why music should be taught in the public school. In the third chapter I shall explain what is meant by public school music. In that part I shall endeavor to clarify the objectives of public-school music, and the means by which those objectives may be attained.
