Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is not to discuss every compromise in the Constitution of the United States, but to present the four greatest compromises contained in that great document. These four compromises were selected because they are typical of the differences and disputes that occurred in the Constitutional Convention which met in Philadelphia in 1787. Following an introduction on the Articles of Confederation and the calling of the Constitutional Convention, the tour compromises will be discussed in their order: The Great Compromise; Compromises on Direct Taxation, Regulation of Commerce and the Election o! the President. The ratification of the Constitution by the several States concludes the thesis.
