Abstract
Hence our problem is to determine what the desirable things are that children may do, what means we may use to develop and teach these things, and by what standards we may judge the efficiency of our teaching. Much of the subject matter and many of the habits formed in our schools do not conform to desirable social life outside of school. For instance, we tell children not to receive help from or give help to anyone in an examination or test. To do so is unfair. Yet we ask children to be mutually helpful, to assist the needy, and make donations to charity. Just how shall we make an adjustment in our teaching procedure to prepare children to meet such situations as these? Good citizenship, in other words, is one of the principal aims of education. This involves a sense, of regard for the rights and privileges of others; it implies teamwork and co-operation.
