Abstract
Athletics and athletic games have been a part of man's life ever since his beginning. Naturally, in order to play these games, he had to have a place in which to play. He could not go out into his own back yard or his neighbor's and hold a chariot race or track and field meet. Special places had to be devised for the holding of such contests. Hence, began the development of what was to become our modern stadia. It is my purpose to trace the history and development of these places, from the earliest sources possible, up to our modern stadia. Material on the subject is very scarce, especially that pertaining to the Middle Ages, during which period athletic games tended to decrease and lose popularity. Therefore, if the thesis does not seem to be as long as the average, do not blame the writer, but rather the scarcity of material.
