Abstract

This thesis, presenting a resume of publicity granted welfare organizations by Milwaukee newspapers, over a period extending from 1928 to 1931, is intended to indicate the method in which social news, welfare appeals, and activities notes are handled. Especially during the present economic depression, the need for this type of news is urgent. The public must be constantly stimulated to assist the charities, and consequently the newspapers are used for what is generally considered the best medium to present the appeals. In the publication of these requests, different newspapers handle the material in different forms. The same notice is changed by each newspaper to give it an individualistic note, and to avoid apparent press-agenting. With that premise in view, the author presents the following material as representative of newspaper publicity, a publicity which has been given whole -heartedly, even to the extent that regular reporters were assigned to cover charity beats. The material has been gathered without bias, in an attempt to indicate the newspaper whose publicity was best suited to the appellation 'constructive'. These variant forms of publication form the greater share of the body of material, and yet they should not force from view the fact that an attempt is being made to prove that regardless, of the attitude assumed by the papers, they ultimately rendered charity a real service.
