Abstract

The reasons for the choice of this study are several in number. Previous collecting trips had shown to some extent the relatively high productivity of organic life in this stream. From superficial external evidence, however, it seemed likely that the stream should contain some degree of pollution. The contradictory nature of these two observations called for furthur investigation. Then too, the nearness of the location of the Menomonee River to Marquette University contributed to the facility of such an investigation, and also pointed to the possibility that such a survey might be of some use to the Department of Biology. The final explanation for the choice lay in the fact that such investigations have been few in number and our knowledge in this field is distinctly fragmentary.
