Abstract
Reading is not only the most important, but also the most widely discussed and complex subject in the school curriculum. It is the most important, for it is intimately related to all the other school subjects and is essential to every branch of knowledge. Without a knowledge of reading the pupil cannot engage effectively in any desirable life activity. Its primary importance in the curriculum may be gauged by the relatively large amount of time devoted to the subject, the countless number of ingenious teaching devices, the many scientific investigations, as well as the thorough and recent research work done in the field of reading.
