Abstract
When Sir Walter Scott gave life and being to the historical novel , his was by no means the first attempt.
There existed a mass of material and subject matter popularized and used by the terror-romanticists, the creators of the Gothic romance. That Scott was influenced by the writings of his predecessors in the romantic novel and that he embodied in his writings to a great extent the elements that were essential to the Gothic arose romance, that the same basic spirit that created the romance of terror lives on in his novels, perfected and modulated though it be, it is the purpose of this paper to discover.
To do this a study of the basic principles that go to make up the Gothic romance is necessary, after which a comparison between Scott and his predecessors, to demonstrate clearly that between his historical novel and the Gothic romance exists a close affinity.
