Abstract
Santa Teresa, de Jesus was born at Avila on the 28th of March 1515. Her father, Don Alonso Sanchez de Cepeda had been married twice, and Santa Teresa was one of the children of the second marriage, Don Alonso was pious, stern and austere; if not exactly rich, at least so far well-to-do that he was able to provide for his three daughters and twelve sons. Santa Teresa, who has left a beautiful character sketch of him, delighted in speaking of him, and always did so in the terms of the highest veneration. He was fond of good books, of which he collected a considerable number that his children might read too. Santa Teresa’s mother Dona Beatriz had a great passion for reading books of chivalry, and the saint accuses herself of being too greatly influenced by them in her youth.
