Abstract
The main motive in the preparation of this thesis is to present to the public in general, the values of an organized system of recreation which the Milwaukee Public School Board presents through its Extension Department.
The playground is essentially a place for play. Play is recreation. Play gives health to the body and joy to the soul. Whoever has not known the pleasures of youth’s playground has missed half the sweetness of life.
That which brings together the group for restful, recreating, relaxing, vigorous, joyous, social activity is an uplifting force of incalculable value. That which makes us laugh with sheer joy and fills the heart with unselfish love helps to bring out the altruism which we all possess.
It is already known that a happy people are contented. Activity directed into the right channels will produce happiness from whence contentment shall ensue.
Not only are playgrounds idealistically advantageous, but they are also helpful in the practical problems of safety, character-building, fair play, and democracy. Give the children a playground, and the streets shall be deserted. Association*shall be well-grounded, and learning shall be in accord with society.
