Abstract
The theory of motion led three great mathematicians of the seventeenth century into the study of the envelope of a moving line. It was introduced by Christian Huygens, further developed by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhausen, and carefully analyzed by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
