Abstract

The crayfish is a Decapod belonging to the class Crustacea of the phylum Arthropoda. The animal is used for scientific study because it possesses all of the characteristics of the phylum. It has three distinct body divisions, head, thorax, and abdomen; bilateral symetry, metamerism, jointed appendages, a chitinous exoskeleton, a dorsal heart with an incomplete circulatory system, and a nervous system of the annelid type. The crayfish is also used in the laboratory because of its abundance and the ease with which it is handled. The animal is of great economic importance due to its food value to man as well as to "bird, beast, and fish."
