Abstract
The scope of the following thesis is confined to a comparison and a collation of the ideas and ideals of Robert Browning as expressed in his poems, with those of Edmond Rostand, as expressed in his plays; to point out their similarity and their dissimilarity; to demonstrate the fact that Browning lived in an age of skepticism and was himself free from doubt, while Rostand lived in an age of realism and was himself an idealist; to show, therefore, that both stood outside the influences of their age, in that they held fast to certain optimistic conceptions of life, while their contemporaries repudiated faith and idealism.
