Abstract

To understand, fully the scenes in which the ghosts appear in Shakespeare's plays, it is necessary to understand the current superstitions as well as the current philosophical and theological opinions regarding ghosts in Elizabethan times. A brief survey of Elizabethan theology is an Immense aid in developing an appreciation of the ghost scenes in Shakespeare's plays. The basic material in this chapter was obtained from Chapter IX of lily B. Campbell's book, Shakespeare's Tragic Heroes.
