Abstract
Our word tragedy is directly derived from the Greek words: tragos, goat, and ode, song, goatsong. In the spring Dionysius, God of Wine, was worshipped. Human sacrifice early gave way to the sacrifice of animals. Groups of worshippers, dressed as satyrs, sur¬ rounded the priest while the goat was sacrificed and fitting rites observed in honor of the much loved God. Gradually the recitation of the dramatic parts fell to one person, and the chorus joined in at the end.
