Abstract
This thesis is an attempt to set forth the desirable characteristics to be looked for in a geography textbook, means of judging such texts, together with a compilation of opinions of authorities in the field of geography along this particular line.
Many teachers are to a great extent dependent upon the text, because of insufficient preparation or Jack of proper equipment. In many cases the only available material (such as maps, pictures, diagrams, and statistical tables) which innumerable of our school children in the elementary grades ever come in close contact with, is that which is found in the school text. It is for this reason that the choice of a good text Is of essential value.
The textbook should give us the essentials of the subject to be taught, and together with the teacher as an interpreter and guide, the child can be introduced to a world of knowledge which has hitherto been unknown to him.
If the textbook is one that is written in his own language, and not beyond his vocabulary, that contains illustrations that are attractive to him, and furnishes activities and suggestions that appeal to him - it will be far-reaching in arousing his interest and will fulfill its objective.
