Abstract
When the Chinese first came to the United States is uncertain. There was no separate census of the Chinese up to 1850, due to their inconsiderable numbers. 1850 marks the great gold rush to California. The demand for labor in San Francisco was extreme due to the gold rush. servants and laborers left the city; there was domestic work to be done for which the Chinese coolies were suitable.
