Abstract

The moral and intellectual background of the eighteenth century readily divides itself into two periods: the first from 1700 to 1760, is characterized as a time of unabashed indecency, political intrigue and tyranny; from 1760 to 1800 we have a period depicting a slow but clearly perceptible change in personal, social and public ideals.
