Abstract

In modern civilization we find numerous and varied hazards, without a sufficient knowledge to combat the startling increase of accidents caused by these hazards. In the United States six per cent to the deaths are due to carelessness. The number of American soldiers, who made the supreme sacrifice in Europe during the nineteen months that our country was in the World War, was 77,118. Statistics of the United States Census Bureau show, in the death registration area of the United States during the twelve months of the year 1920, the number of violent deaths, exclusive of suicide, was 68,697. According to a statement published by the American Red Cross in 1921, at least 200,000 of America's vast army of accident victims sacrificed each year are children under fifteen years of age.
