Abstract
No one who knows modern literature will deny that Hilaire Belloc is one of the greatest of the English writers of today, and will give due honor for the excellent prose of his essays, biographies, and novels; but, undoubtedly, only a few will associate his name with modern poetry or accredit to him any poetical contribution of literary value. Why should this be so? Why should it seem strange to speak of Belloc as a poet? Is it because his poetry is inferior, obscure, or in any way new; or, is it not rather because his small collection of verse has been overshadowed by the great bulk of biographical studies, his military histories, and his political novels which fill the book shelves of our libraries?
