Abstract
The object of this paper is to give the various phases of the trend of modern Scenic Design. I say phases because each unit treated is merely another aspect of the one major movement, Abstraction. Consequently it is impossible to make any definite division. Moreover, every theatrical production is always carried out in several of these theories; no artist holds to one.
Also it ls necessary to state that only the theoretical side has been treated. To consider the technical and the mechanical methods would bring this paper beyond its purpose. We are interested not in how the artist works but in what he desires to attain.
