Abstract
This paper is an attempt to show the part or the inn and tavern in the lives of the early English writers, and the influence it had on their work. The English inn has a romantic interest to readers of English literature, chiefly the result of rhapsodic verse about the Mermaid, the Apollo Club, and other similar places, written by the poets of the time and many others since. The effect has been to cast a romantic glow over the inn which yet glimmers over the remains of that institution to-day.
