Abstract
Do to the fact that Paul c·1audel is still living, and is still in the prime of life, there has been no extensive work done by critics and biographers on this author and his works. There have been, as yet, no entire books written on the subject. It has been said that no man is ever acknowledged to be really great until after his death. Perhaps this holds true in the case of Paul Claudel, man of a affairs and -writer of miracle plays. In France, hie native country, he is known as a great poet by many, but due to his residence in several other countries while in the Diplomatic Service, even to his own countrymen he is a foreigner. Then too, his plays, in this age of jazz, are plays that do not attract the general public. Dealing as they do, with great ' problems, showing the relation between the soul and the body, they are difficult even to read. Only a few of Claudel's plays have been translated into English from the French. But those which have been translated are considers among the· best and most typical that he has written.
