Abstract
In this thesis, we shall attempt to show, that the power to appeal to the emotions gives a book permanent interest and consequently literary quality. From the very outset of our discussion, we shall deal entirely with the emotions in general and the elements involved in emotion. After this consideration we shall spend some time upon the literary emotions and their appeal, the sense of beauty, the power to appeal to the emotions as exhibited in the works of Poe and Pope, and gradually arise to the proof, that the power to appeal to the emotions gives a book permanent interest and consequently literary quality.
