Abstract
The Voice is the greatest instrument that there is in existence It has the power to make more tones varying in quality than any instrument made by man. It is the most beautiful of instruments, in that each voice has its own peculiar beauty. But botwithstanding [sic] all this, this beautiful instrument is treated with less care than those made ny man. How many people learn to take care of the voice just because it is a beautiful instrument? People buy musical instruments and treat them with great care when they know that they can replace them if necessary, but how many people take good care of the voice, even knowing that when it is ruined they cannot replace it. The general consensus or opinion is that it is not necessary to take care or the singing voice unless the individual wants to prepare for public work. It would be vastly better if every person who likes to sing or can carry a tune would take care or his singing voice under a competent teacher and have the joy or knowing that he is preserving, with the proper care the greatest instrument in the world. People ask the question-"Is there any other value than just singing comes from the study or the voice?" The answer is 'yes' for, besides the cultural value it has been conceded by the greatest educators that the study or music in any form is the greatest help in developing concentration and from a psychological standpoint is a study to be followed. If this is true from the educational standpoint and from the psychological standpoint, then the study of the voice, the most complicated of instruments is of the most value along these lines. Aside from the educational benefits, there is the healthful benefits. Do you know that in ordunary talking we use only about one-third of our lungs? What becomes of the other two-thirds? They become rather stagnated. It is a well known fact that it is the unusual person who does not follow the line of the least resistance and is, we do not have to use our lungs, will we? There are two very beneficial values in the study or the voice, one is the fact that the breathing is perfected and the individual unconsciously uses all his lungs all the time whether he is singing or not because he has formed the habit of proper breathing, for that is the essential factor in singing. Then he has, by his practicing, strengthened the muscles of his throat and that will keep him from having troubles with the throat. Would not these two benefits alone be argument in favor of taking proper care of the voice.
