Abstract
Prior to the middle of the sixteenth century the knowledge of parasites, their habits, life-histories and forms as limited to a few external parasites and a few parasitic worms. Previous to the discovery of, and knowledge gained by, the study of microscopic parasites, and the effects produced by them, nearly all diseases were thought of as some sort of punishment for sins committed.
