Abstract
The use of monomeric styrene in the preparation of synthetic elastomers was introduced by the Germans in their co- polymer of butadiene and monomeric styrene to form the Buna S rubber. Research along the lines of commercial preparation has been done by many investigators in recent years. Ho ever, much of this work is still in the secret stage.
It is the purpose of this paper to show the preparation of styrene from benzene by means of the intermediate product, ethylbenzene. Dehydrogenation at high temperatures by means of catalysts is used.
