Abstract

The withdrawal of the Roman legions from Britain in the fifth century was followed by invasions of Teutonic peoples from the mainland of Europe. Jutes, Angles, and Saxons crossed the English Channel, crowded the original Britons into the Welsh highlands, and founded the old Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy. One of these seven kingdoms was Wessex. Here was born about the year 680 A. D., at Crediton or Kyrton, the great apostle of the Germans, Boniface, known originally as Winfrid.
