Abstract

The slightest investigation into the writings of Richard Steele will reveal the fact that he is related to the periodical essay. His writings are characterized by a personal, confidential attitude towards his subjects, by an informal, familiar style, and by a concern with everyday manners and morals rather than with public affairs. My aim in the following pages is to tell something of the man himself, to describe and analyze his most famous periodical publications, and to evaluate his literary ability from a study of these publications.
