Abstract

Snakes are the most highly specialized of all reptiles. The absence of limbs, in itself, is a great specialization. They possess a great modification of the jaws which enables them to engulf large prey entire. Probably the most out­ standing specialization is the remarkable modification of dentition in the venomous snakes. The so-called fangs are nothing more than teeth modified to a great degree.
