Abstract
Tilghman, in 1866, discovered the fundamental principle of the sulfite process - the treatment of wood with a solution of sulfur dioxide gas in water, with the addition of an alkaline bisulfite. However, he was unable to pursue this discovery because of the difficulty of obtaining acid resisting materials.
