Abstract
Napoleon Bonaparte entered upon the stage of French history during a period of unrest. The French masses had overthrown and beheaded their Bourbon king. They were trying new theories and fine-spun doctrines or government. Human selfishness made many or these ideal forms of democratic government failures. European royal governments looked with alarm at these (New Deal) governments, and were waiting at a moments notice to crush the French nation and replace the government with that of a king. France was looking for a leader like the type of Napoleon. Whether it were accidental or through courage or perseverance, we find Napoleon gaining small degrees of recognition. Then his success at arms with his French troops in Italy. Victory after victory followed, placing him in the hearts or the French people. He over-rode the directorate and became First Consul; he became Emperor. He not only unified France, but his campaigns or· conquest gave her a greater area of territory than that or Charlemagne's. He became ruler of Europe.
