Abstract
Probably no major event has provoked more divergent reports and opinions than the Spanish Civil war. To attempt to reach a basis of fact in the early events of the war upon which to build future opinion, to remove the aloud of propaganda hanging over the events of the war in order that they might be more understandable was the desire of the author. To do this best, current weekly magazines which did not dwell upon the actual maneuvers of the war, but attempted to estimate the significance of the events, were chosen. The Commonweal and the Nation, two well-established magazines, because of their contrasting alms and conclusions, were selected for the study.
